Dozens of people took to the streets of Juliaca today to support Yarita Lizeth Yanarico in the face of a preliminary investigation that has been opened against her in Lima. The case revolves around her alleged support for the social demonstrations that demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte.

The citizens of Juliaca are outraged after learning that the Public Ministry opened a preliminary investigation against the folklore singer. Faced with this possibility, they went out to protest as a sign of support for Yarita Lizeth. Protesters view the investigation as another example of the Peruvian government's oppression of indigenous citizens of Aymara and Quechua descent.

For its part, the government of President Boluarte views any material support of the ongoing protests as an “apology for terrorism”, and as a serious criminal offense. Peru's stigmatization and repression of protesters has recently been documented and condemned as a violation of human rights in a report by Amnesty International and in an investigation by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

"Yarita, listen, the people are with you", said the protesters in unison, who were carrying a large black and white flag, more than 300 meters long, symbolizing Juliaca's mourning for all those killed during the protests. The flag reached the intersection of Jirón El Maestro and Piérola, in the Cercado, where a hotel owned by Yarita Lizeth is located.

"Everyone loves the singer Yarita Lizeth, and if they continue with this, the protest will become more forceful," said another of the citizens while the protest continued accompanied by bands of musicians who performed the song "Corta Venas" (Cut Veins).

Yarita Lizeth's support for protesters

The first open demonstration of support that Yarita Lizeth made was to donate S/50,000 soles for the care of those wounded by Peruvian National Police (PNP) bullets and shotgun pellets during the Juliaca Massacre on January 9th, when eighteen civilians died. What happened that day in Juliaca, according to the singer's explanation, moved her too much.

According to interviews offered by Yarita Lizeth, the protests were acts of solidarity in favor of their countrymen, who started a protest that they considered fair. At all times, she has declined to support vandalism, but she did support peaceful demonstrations.

This led her to offer her bus - the one she travels with to her concerts - to the protesters who traveled from Puno to the capital to protest against the government of Dina Boluarte in an event that was known as the Second March of the 'Cuatro Suyos' (Four Quarters), which recalled the name of the four cardinal points and symbolized the four regions into which Tahuantinsuyo, the Inca Empire, was divided. The march brought thousands of protesters from the south, center, north and east of Peru to Lima.

Later, Yarita Lizeth was also seen at the protests in the capital of Peru. This time, she was delivering water and food to citizens who were exercising their constitutional right to protest peacefully. As well as the singer from Puno, other artists also made donations in favor of the citizens who demand the departure of Dina Boluarte.
