The company Ferrocarril Transandino SA (FETRANSA), concessionaire of the railway in the south and southeast of the country, announced that as of today, Tuesday, February 7, railway operations are authorized in the section Pachar - Ollantaytambo - Machu Picchu - Hidroeléctrica, Cusco region.

Through a statement issued Monday night, FETRANSA specified that this decision was made "after verifying that the railway in this section is in operational condition after having been rehabilitated after suffering damage as a result of the protests registered in the area".

It adds that last weekend it was verified that "there have been no blockages or damage to the railway in the aforementioned section".

The document also emphasizes that there is the protection of the Peruvian National Police and military custody at the main railway stations and previous blockade points that affected the infrastructure.

However, the pronouncement underlines that this authorization will be subject to the security situation in these areas being maintained and that there are no blockages or damage or events that alter railway operations.

" Otherwise, we will be forced to suspend railway operations; without prejudice to the actions that railway operators may adopt to protect the safety of their passengers and workers," he stressed.

Operations resume tomorrow

After being notified of this decision, the company PerúRail announced that tomorrow, Wednesday, February 8, it will partially resume its railway operations between Ollantaytambo, Machu Picchu and Hidroeléctrica.

He maintained that the operation of its mixed trains (local + tourist cars) was arranged on Wednesdays and Sundays, starting on February 8 until the necessary conditions for the railway operation are met. These extraordinary train operations will be subject to the safety indications permanently provided by the concessionaire.

Finally, the company reiterated its predisposition to resume the regular operation of its train services to Machu Picchu, in safe conditions and without exposing the integrity of passengers and workers to possible blockages of the railway line.

Company rejects Municipality of Machu Picchu Pueblo accusations

In its statement, PeruRail SA also referred to the pronouncement of the Municipality of Machu Picchu Pueblo that accused it of an alleged lack of interest in resuming its operations in the area.

He assured that the operations of its trains on the route to Machu Picchu were suspended in compliance with the restriction on railway operations established by the concessionaire until today, as a security measure in the face of the repeated blockade and damage to the railway in protest actions of the indefinite strike complied with in the Cusco region.

"Therefore, we reject the statements of the Municipality of Machu Picchu regarding an alleged lack of interest in providing train services for the inhabitants of the district; since, since the beginning of the indefinite strike in Cusco, PeruRail has been demonstrating a predisposition to carry out extraordinary operations of the local train," he said.

The company added that these operations were carried out with the objective of facilitating the supply of food and other products to the population of Machu Picchu Pueblo and its communities, under the security conditions required for these operations. He recalled that the last operation of these services was carried out on Sunday, January 29, in coordination with the concessionaire and the rail authority itself.
