Cusco: Peru Rail refuses to provide humanitarian trains to residents of Machu Picchu (Spanish)

Residents report they are unable to supply themselves with basic resources. Peru Rail trains are not operating even though there are no longer protests and blockades in place.

Residents request that trains provide essential service

Residents of the Machu Picchu District in the Cusco Region have been incommunicado for two weeks due to lack of transportation. They indicate that the Peru Rail company does not want to provide essential humanitarian service to citizens. The situation harms the hundreds of locals who permanently reside in Aguas Calientes since they cannot supply themselves with food and other basic provisions for residents of the Machu Picchu District, in the Cusco Region, have been incommunicado for two weeks due to the lack of transportation. They indicate that the Peru Rail company does not want to provide humanitarian service to citizens. The situation harms the hundreds of locals who permanently reside in Pueblo Machu Picchu (also known as Aguas Calientes) since they cannot otherwise supply themselves with food and other basic provisions.

Faced with this situation, the Municipality of Machu Picchu issued a statement in which it urged said company to reconsider its position, since it would be endangering the integrity of the people. The Municipality pointed out that, since there is no transportation, the residents seek to supply themselves by other "artisanal" (i.e. unauthorized) means, putting their lives at risk.

According to David Moreno, the representative of the United Front of the Interests of Machu Picchu, there have been no protests in the area for two days. However, the trains of the Peru Rail company have not restarted service operations for citizens.

“I think the excuse for not providing service was the protests. For this reason, we have stopped protesting in the area, but even so, you cannot see the trains. It seems that they are waiting for the tourist service to reopen in the llaqta, as if they were only interested in that (tourism), (as if) they were not interested in the population that lives in the place," Moreno said.

According to the leader, the lack of train transportation, the only means by which the inhabitants of Machupicchu can supply themselves with food, medicine, gas, and other goods, is harming at least 2,000 residents. The representative even said that there are five garbage warehouses in the area that cannot be emptied due to the lack of the train. "I wish we had other routes so we wouldn't feel locked in by Peru Rail," he lamented.

Protests against the government moved them to Lima

David Moreno further specified that, although they stopped carrying out demonstrations in Machu Picchu, they will continue to send protest delegations to Lima to replace the citizens who had already traveled days ago to demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte.
