Mob Attacks Police Officers in Lima and Provinces (Spanish)
Agents use tear gas canisters to repel violent activists.
Demonstrations resumed yesterday in Lima and other regions of the country against the government of President Dina Boluarte who took office after the vacancy of Pedro Castillo.
During the mobilizations that have been carried out in downtown Lima, a series of attacks by protesters on members of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) have been reported.
At the intersection of Abancay and Nicolas de Piérola avenues, in an attempt by the demonstrators to advance violently towards the Congress of the Republic, the police agents withdrew them with tear gas canisters.
Members of the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP) and a group of reservists have also joined the march in Lima.
At the same time, in the city of Huancayo, brawls between members of the PNP and protesters were also reported. During the mobilization, the police detected that some people had brought metal rods, which led to the confrontation.
Likewise, various attacks on journalists were reported in Lima and the provinces. The press men were pushed, beaten, and water bottles were thrown.
For its part, the Ombudsman's Office detailed that thirty-five blockade points have been registered in the regions of Junín, Apurímac, Arequipa, Madre de Dios, Puno, and Cusco.
Likewise, the agency reported that there were clashes with law enforcement in the vicinity of the Arequipa airport (AQP). In addition to this, a burning of the Ilave toll booth in Puno and an attack on a public transport vehicle in Tacna were reported.
GUILTY
President Dina Boluarte said that there are those sentenced for terrorism that fuel these protests and encourage acts of vandalism.
She accused that the acts of violence in these demonstrations are financed and promoted by illegal mining and drug trafficking.
“Behind there are interests. I am going to reiterate that we are facing two illegal forces, which are illegal mining and drug trafficking. All these logistics, for these marches and protests, do not come from the air, someone is financing them, and who has the logistical capacity to finance these protests?” the President declared.
