Peru's Congress is in the spotlight. Sixteen countries have spoke out against the bill that persecutes NGOs and the Association of Judges questions the counter-reform that eliminates the National Board of Justice (JNJ).
Yesterday, 16 embassies from countries in Europe, Oceania, and North America spoke out against the opinion promoted by the Foreign Relations Commission, chaired by Fujimori Alejandro Aguinaga, to pursue the financing and activities of NGOs.
“As cooperation partners of Peru, we are concerned about the proposed amendments to the law creating the Peruvian Agency for International Cooperation (APCI) that will restrict the ability of civil society to operate in an enabling environment. Democracies are more inclusive, equitable, stable, and prosperous when civil society is fully empowered to protect human rights and respond to the needs of citizens,” they stated.
The countries that signed the joint statement include Germany, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Spain, the United States, Finland, France, Ireland, New Zealand, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland and the European Union.
The JNJ in the spotlight
Regarding the constitutional counter-reform that eliminates the JNJ and replaces it with the National School of Judiciary, the Association of Judges for Justice and Democracy (JUSDEM) expressed its alert about the possible discussion of this proposal in the Plenary Session of Congress.
“It only highlights the veiled and questionable purpose of enervating democratic institutions through direct and absolute political control of Congress, not only over the School of Judiciary, but also over the system of administration of justice,” JUSDEM(La Republica [Spanish]) said in a statement.
The legislation proposing to eliminating the JNJ was approved last week in the Constitution Commission, chaired by Fujimori congresswoman Martha Moyano.
