Train to Machu Picchu returns to daily operation (Diario El Sol del Cusco [Spanish] - 2/14/2023)
Train to Machu Picchu returns to daily operation (Spanish)
Good news for tourism in Cusco. Since yesterday, February 13, the train that covers the Ollantaytambo-Machu Picchu route now operates every day, announced the PeruRail company, which specified that daily service will initially be provided until Sunday, February 19.
Through their official Twitter account, PeruRail indicated that during this period train services (local + tourist train) will operate with four frequencies a day (two one way and two return).
PeruRail said that this measure was implemented in compliance with the authorization of railway operations between Ollantaytambo, Machu Picchu and Hidroeléctrica, arranged by the railway concessionaire, Ferrocarril Transandino SA on February 6.
The measure was announced less than a week after the restart of train operations to and from Machu Picchu after being suspended since January 19. On Wednesday, February 8, the Ollantaytambo-Machu Picchu railway service partially resumed. In those first days the trains only provided service on Wednesday the 8th and Sunday the 12th of February.
Special Offer
In conjunction with the return to regular service, PeruRail has announced a limited time 50% discount during the month of February for PeruRail Expedition trains using the coupon code ACT50U. Additional information can be found on the PeruRail promotions webpage (in Spanish).
Frequencies conditioned to security
PeruRail also specified that the resumed operations of the train to Machu Picchu are subject to the safety indications provided by the concessionaire.
In its statement, PeruRail said that as of Monday, February 20, its published frequencies will be regular as long as the security conditions and necessary authorizations are confirmed.
This measure is based on the original statement from Ferrocarril Transandino, the railway concessionaire, which indicates that this decision was made "after verifying that the railway in this section is in operational condition after having been rehabilitated after suffering damage to consequence of the protests registered in the area."
It adds that it was verified that "there have been no blockages or damage to the railway in the aforementioned section."
Closure of Machu Picchu leaves losses of S/2.5 million per day
The demonstrations that resumed on January 4, 2023, have generated great economic losses in various regions of the country, Cusco being one of them. Protest related stoppages have caused the tourism sector to decline and many merchants and businessmen have made the decision to close their businesses.
Added to this is an increase in the unemployment rate in the imperial city since dozens of travel agencies, tourist guides, and more are affected by the protests in recent months.
John González, director of the Cusco Chamber of Commerce, explained that the town loses approximately 2.5 million soles a day. A situation that has left thousands of families without economic support, since 70% of the population lives on tourism.
