Peru: tourists prefer to travel north for fear of conflicts in South (Spanish)

The carnivals of Cajamarca and Rioja are the most attractive for tourists. Tumbes and Piura are other favorite regions.

Given the social conflicts and protests that exist in the south of the Peru, tourists are choosing to spend their days off or vacations in the north of Peru, to take advantage of the carnival festivities and the beaches of Tumbes and Piura.

Blockades persist on the roads that connect to Ayacucho, Cusco, and Puno. This has caused visitors to seek other recreation regions, one of which is Cajamarca.

“Cajamarca has been recovering in a stable way due to the coordinated work between public institutions and private unions. The problems that the country has had in the south have slightly diverted tourism towards Cajamarca. There are a lot of expectations for the carnival. The hotel industry is already 100% sold out (…). We know through GORE Cajamarca and the Association of Hotels and Restaurants that the hotels are already sold out," said Eusebio Díaz, president of the Cajamarca Regional Chamber of Tourism to Peru21.

According to the spokesperson, only in Cajamarca has hotel occupancy reached 90% and could house around 10,000 more tourists than expected.

San Martín region is another attraction for tourists

The Riojan Carnival in the San Martín region is also another tourist destination at this time. The department has 90% occupancy as reported by the San Martín Regional Chamber of Tourism.

“We have international tourism that is practically zero, but we have a segment of national tourism that continues to arrive (…). We have cheap hotels, quite cheap, and that keeps tourism going. In some cases, such as Rioja, on weekends all the hotels are full. They are at 90% (occupancy)”, said Ramón Da Cruz, president of the San Martín's Chamber.

In the case of Northern Peru, it was learned that Piura and Tumbes also increased their number of tourists, this is observed in airline bookings and hotel occupancy.
