Peru: Narcoterrorists in VRAEM kill 7 police officers after ambush (Spanish)

Assassins finished off the victims with shots to the head. According to preliminary reports, the attackers belonged to the Mobilized Communist Party of Peru (MPCP), which is dedicated to drug trafficking in the area.

Six members of the National Division of Special Operations of the Peruvian National Police (PNP - DINOES) and two police officers from the Natividad PNP Police Station were ambushed by members of the MPCP criminal organization as they were traveling in a van near the town center of Natividad in the district of Unión Asháninka, La Convención Provence, Cusco Region. 

The MPCP, led by Víctor Quispe Palomino, operates in the Valley of the Apurímac, Ene, and Mantaro Rivers (Known by its acronym VRAEM. In 1999, Quispe Palomino broke with Abimael Guzmán Reinoso, leader of the Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) communist guerrilla group and formed a drug trafficking organization in the VRAEM. The MPCP's primary activities are the collection of quotas from cultivators and other drug traffickers, and the sale and transportation of drugs.

According to a recent report from the National Intelligence Directorate (DINI), the MPCP has approximately 400 members and are equipped with heavy weapons

According to sources in the area, the attack took place at 9:40 on Saturday, February 11. The attackers shot at the driver of the truck so that he would lose control of the vehicle and simultaneously shot at the PNP - DINOES officers who were in the back. Once the truck overturned, the assassins approached the wounded and finished them off with shots to the head. They also hit other officers who tried to take cover to return fire.

The PNP - DINOES troops were heading to the town of Puerto Cocos to carry out an investigative procedure when they were attacked.

The officers killed in the line of duty have been identified as Alfredo Loayza Carbajal, Sandro Lorenzo Villegas Corahua, Ivan Muñoz Fasabi, Williams Quispe Anchay, Luis Alberto Cerrón Palacios, Saul Luis Huaroc, and Wilder Eliseo Conoczo.

PNP Captain Erwin Mego Villogas was injured in the attack, but survived and has been evacuated to Lima for treatment.
