Peru: all sectors united to reopen Machu Picchu (Spanish)

The Minister of Culture, Leslie Urteaga, announced that the Executive is working with all sectors to reopen the sanctuary of Machu Picchu on Wednesday, February 15, which guarantees the security and integrity of the visitors and workers.

"A plan to recover the country's image abroad is being worked on."

“We are working with the regional and local authorities, through technical meetings, and also with the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, who has asked us to join efforts from various sectors to reopen Machu Picchu. The negative image of the country abroad is really worrying. For this reason, we hope that the mayors of the neighboring provinces provide us with guarantees for all visitors. If we have that certainty, the 15th would be the day to reopen," said the Minister.

“We regret this situation that diminishes the image of the country, but Machu Picchu will always be the jewel of Peru and the world." She added, however, "the social crisis has affected, now we have the possibility of dialogue with all the actors, to reopen and visit the llaqta in peace, without violence or threats.”

Campaign

The head of Culture announced that they are "working on a plan to recover the country's image abroad, which is expected to be presented in the coming months, to say that Peru is peaceful, safe and that we are prepared to receive visitors from all countries".

Urteaga affirmed that with the closure of Machu Picchu, in December 2022, Cusco lost between five million and six million soles. Meanwhile in Puno, with the cancellation of the Festival of the Virgin of Candelaria, the region stopped receiving around 115 million soles. The minister also spoke about the Kuelap archaeological zone. “Before putting value, we need to work on the technical part. For this reason, we have made an effort to have a multidisciplinary technical team, not only archaeologists, but also engineers, geologists, hydrologists, because we have a geological fault there. Now we have a professional like José Bastante,” she said.

Heritage Education

The head of Culture also participated yesterday in a didactic workshop, together with parents and their children, as part of the museographic exhibition 'Wasinman Kutispa, Recovered Heritage', which is presented at the Ministry of Culture headquarters. "From the Ministry of Culture, we consider that working from heritage education is a milestone to forge better citizens and reinforce pride for what is ours, for our identity and our cultural diversity," she said. There, he said that the Wasinman Kutispa exhibition will be open until February 26 in the Paracas room of the ministry's headquarters, at Avenida Javier Prado Este 2465, San Borja, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
