Machu Picchu: more than 700 tourists visit in first day of reopening (Spanish)
The llaqta (sanctuary) of Machu Picchu reopened yesterday and national and foreign visitors are returning, allowing the reactivation of the local and regional economy.
Llaqta (sanctuary) of Machu Picchu
With much anticipation from Peruvian and foreign visitors alike, the Ministry of Culture reopened the doors of the Sanctuary of Machupicchu, after receiving the commitments of the institutions that make up the Machupicchu Management Unit (UGM), municipal authorities of Machupicchu and Ollantaytambo, directors of the Chamber of Commerce and leaders of social organizations, to guarantee the security of the monument, and transport services so that tourists have an unforgettable experience in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Maritza Rosa Candia, the Director of the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco (DDC-Cusco), oversaw the welcome of visitors, and represented the Minister of Culture, Leslie Urteaga.
Yesterday morning the entrance was filled with displays of hubbub from the visitors. In the first group, around one hundred tourists entered, of which thirty-eight were Peruvians and forty-five foreigners. The 57-year-old Korean citizen Mink Young Lee, who purchased his ticket this Monday, February 13 at the Machupicchu Cultural Center, was the first to enter Machu Picchu. By noon, more than seven hundred visitors had entered the park.

The Ministry of Culture has arranged that visitors who previously purchased admission tickets, with dates after January 1, 2023, will be given priority and will enter the sanctuary without any inconvenience. To do this, no formalities are required, and they only need to show up at the gates of the llaqta with their unused ticket. From today they are allowed to enter with those tickets.
The Network of Inca Trails to Machu Picchu will continue to be closed for maintenance during February 2023.
What is not allowed is to reschedule or enter Machu Picchu if the ticket was issued prior to January 1st. The Director of the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco, Maritza Rosa Candia, oversaw welcoming the visitors, and represented representing the Minister of Culture, Leslie Urteaga.
Ticketing
Ticket sales are continuing as normal, both on the official Machu Picchu webpage (https://www.machupicchu.gob.pe/?lang=en) and in person at the headquarters of DDC-Cusco on Calle Maruri and in Machupicchu Pueblo. Daily admission to Machu Picchu is capped at 4,044 visitors.
Likewise, requests for refunds of the entrance tickets to the Machu Picchu National Archaeological Park and Network of Inca Trails from those affected by the park closure are being received since January 21, 2023.
For refunds, visitors must submit their application, at the office of the DDC - Cusco, by email to ingresos@culturacusco.gob.pe, or physically deliver the application to the DDC Cusco Treasury Office, located at Avenida La Cultura 238-Condominio Huáscar.
