Cusco: explosion at Macamango Military Barracks leaves at least 14 injured and more than 70 houses affected (Diario El Sol del Cusco [Spanish] - 2/6/2023)
Affected buildings include a health center and a school. The Command of the Army of Peru has ordered the inspection system to initiate an investigation.
An explosion occurred in the powder magazine located in the facilities of the Macamango Military Barracks, headquarters of the 33rd Infantry Brigade, in the city of Quillabamba, in Cusco. At least fourteen people, including citizens and staff from the barracks, were reported to be injured by the Mayor of the Province of La Convención Alex Curi León.
Curi León stated that there would be at least seventy homes and buildings affected, including a health center and an educational center, and a full damage assessment will be made today. "We have verified that the explosion and shock wave have affected several houses, I have asked the Army general who is going to compensate for these damages, and he has told us that it will be the Ministry of Defense. Today the verification and verification will be made, we will be vigilant,' said the Mayor.
He indicated that by identifying the smoke early, it allowed the barracks personnel to get to safety and avoid a tragedy.
After the incident, the Peruvian Army Command informed that at 6:45 p.m. there was an explosion in the powder magazine located on the premises of the Macamango Military Barracks - Quillabamba, Cusco, headquarters of the 33rd Infantry Brigade.
"According to the first investigations, presumably said explosion would have originated due to the exudation of some explosives; which caused deterioration in the infrastructure of the powder magazine; no personal injuries have been registered inside the military installation" the Command said in the statement.
They added that personnel from the 33rd Infantry Brigade have been registering the people and neighboring houses affected by this explosion, to identify personal and material damage to the residents of this military installation.
The Peruvian Army Command has arranged for the inspection system to initiate an investigation process in this regard.
