CGTP reports detention of its national leader Ernesto Tapia at start of National Strike

The Twitter account of the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP) has reported the detention of its national leader Ernesto Tapia. This occurred at the beginning of the indefinite National Strike by the union against the government of Peru's President Dina Boluarte.

The union tweeted:

"The CGTP denounces that the dictatorship of Dina Boluarte and its instruments of repression have arbitrarily detained comrade Ernesto Tapia, National leader of the #CGTP, for whom we demand his immediate release."

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion (MTPE) had declared the strike called by the CGTP as inadmissible under Peru's Collective Labor Relations Law (LRCT)

Jesús Castillo Rivera, a member of the CGTP Labor Defense Department, reported that the CGTP has approximately 800,000 workers throughout the country, most of them from the public sector. In addition, it makes up 60% of union members in Peru and brings together important unions in different sectors. This includes industry, mining, civil construction, municipalities, and the Single Union of Education Workers of Peru (SUTEP).
