At least four injured during Saturday's demonstrations in Lima (Spanish)
Saturday's protests were held one day after the Congressional Constitution Commission sent to archive the project to advance the 2023 elections presented by the Executive.
Citizens from various regions of the country mobilized on Saturday in the historic center of Lima, in another march against the government of Dina Boluarte.
The march began around 4:00 pm from Plaza Dos de Mayo where protesters arrived from different districts of the capital. The protesters toured the main streets of the city center with chants and banners demanding the resignation of Dina Boluarte, the closure of Congress, the advancement of general elections to 2023 and the call for a Constituent Assembly.
"They are not taking us out of this fight," Adela Paz, 68, from Cusco, told the AFP news agency, who called for "Peru's change in favor of its people who work."
Unrest
There were clashes between protesters and the Peruvian National Police (PNP) at the intersection of José Gálvez Avenue with Grau and Abancay Avenues.
Near José Gálvez, the PNP launched tear gas canisters against the demonstrators. After fires and several detentions, police reinforced security in the Miguel Grau square with motorized troops.
At another point in the center of the city, there were also clashes between Avenues Nicolás de Piérola and Abancay, an area where a police fence prevented access to Abancay in the direction of the Congress of the Republic.
In this regard, the agents began to mobilize while a group of protesters threw firecrackers and stones to break the police siege.
Attacks on journalists
Alejandro Cotrina, a photographer for the periodical La Mula, was attacked by two people who were chasing him and approached to hit him in the face and then tried to steal his camera. Thanks to the intervention of other people in the crowd, theft was avoided. At the time of his declaration, he had a bleeding lip.
The National Association of Journalists of Peru (ANP) denounced that several reporters and photojournalist were attacked by the PNP while they were covering Saturday's anti-government march in Lima.
"Police agents attacked photojournalist Juan Zapata, from the Wayka portal when he was recording violent action against protesters (...) He points out that they insulted him, searched his belongings and hit his head and camera, damaging the lens," the ANP reported through its official Twitter account.
Paola Ugaz, reporter for the Spanish newspaper ABC, along with other colleagues was also "ambushed and beaten" by PNP officers, according to the journalistic union.
The ANP also reported the attack on the Wayka media reporter, Patricia Lucho, while she was recording how the "agents surrounded protesters and took away their protective equipment." "(A) reporter from the portal (Wayka), Rael Mora, came to defend her and they tried to stop him," the organization said.
Wounded
The Defensoría del Pueblo (Ombudsman's Office) reported that, during its supervision in different health centers, two injured people were admitted to the Grau Emergency Hospital, one to the Guillermo Almenara Hospital, and an injured police officer remains at the PNP Augusto B. Leguía Hospital.
