In an interview with Exitosa, the Archbishop of Huancayo, Cardinal Pedro Barreto, regretted the decision of the Constitutional Commission of the Congress of the Republic to archive the bill presented by the Executive Power on advancement of general elections, the latter being the fourth legislative initiative with that proposal rejected in a week.

During the dialogue with Jesús Verde in Hablemos Claro, Barreto spoke like this after the open letter of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference (CEP) addressed to the Congress Members, where they consider that it is "urgent" to approve the call for elections for this year.

"The high interests of the Nation are, at this moment, in a special way in the decision of the Congress of the Republic. For this reason, it hurts our soul, we could say like this, that they have filed this proposal to advance the elections because the people are shouting and clamoring for a long time for an early election," he declared in our media.

"This is what we must say clearly: the Peruvian people have the right to decide the fate of our country through transparent and fair elections to renew the Executive and Legislative Branches," he added.

In this line, the Archbishop of Huancayo considered that Parliament should reconsider "its motivations", to solve the social and political crisis that the country is going through, which has left, to date, fifty-nine dead according to the People's Ombudsman.

"Here we have to make a political decision seeking the common good. And that is why the first thing, at this moment, is for Congress to seriously reconsider its motivations and seek the best policy," he emphasized.

Cardinal Barreto insisted that the CEP's open letter to the parliamentarians "has to be welcomed and listened to by them", because they are the representatives of the people, and not of their parties, ideologies, or interests. "Here you have to put that very clearly," he pointed out in Exitosa.
