The road that connects with the province of Sánchez Carrión is still maintained with restricted access.
Agents of the Peruvian National Police with the support of members of the Army unblocked and took control of the North Pan-American Highway
Agents of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) with the support of Army troops unblocked and took control of the Panamericana Norte highway to resume the circulation of vehicles that had been stranded since January 17 between the districts of Virú and Chao, in the province Virú, La Libertad region.
This was reported by the National Defense manager of the Regional Government of La Libertad, Edwin Dávila, who mentioned that at 01:00 am today, Saturday, the security forces were able to free the road that was blocked from kilometer 496 to 506, so traffic is fluid at this time of the morning in the area.
Dávila commented that the operation began at 1:00 p.m. yesterday from the Virú Bridge and progressed little by little. However, the most critical points were in Chao, where hundreds of protesters confronted law enforcement with stones, sticks and explosive devices that were thrown from long distances.
In response, the National Police launched tear gas bombs to push back the mob that was trying to take control of the road again. Last night, people outside the law set fire to a trailer that was loaded with cement in the Buena Vista sector, in the Chao district.
"Members of the Police have had to act to put out the fire that reduced the heavy cargo unit to ashes," he said.
The official mentioned that the Regional Government of La Libertad also had heavy machinery such as dump trucks and front loaders to help clean the road, which was full of stones, sticks, burned tires and debris.
Injured treated in hospital
Meanwhile, the doctor in charge of the Puente Chao Health Center, Leydi Cabanillas, reported that yesterday afternoon a person with a gunshot wound to the right leg entered the establishment.
The person was identified as Jorge Luis González Castañeda, and according to family members, he was also participating in the protests. The injured man was taken in an ambulance to the Virú hospital, to then try to transfer him to the Víctor Lazarte Echegaray de EsSalud hospital in Trujillo.
Other roads blocked
The concession company Vial Sierra Norte reported that Kilometers 163, La Arena sector, and 177, Huamachuco sector, access to the province of Sánchez Carrión, remain blocked.
Likewise, protesters have blocked Kilometers 1,100 (La Cuchilla sector) and 1,108 (Sausacocha) of the highway that connects Huamachuco with the Sausacocha lagoon.
