Puno: Protesters Try to Take Juliaca Airport (Spanish)
Members of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) confronted a group of protesters who tried to take over the facilities of the Inca Manco Cápac International Airport (JUL) in the city of Juliaca, in the Puno region.
As RPP Noticias was able to learn, the protesters arrived at the airport terminal through Aeropuerto and Independencia avenues. The protesters threw stones and other objects to break down the metal fence and enter the runway.
The forces of order, who were inside the airport as a security measure, were forced to disperse the protesters with tear gas canisters.
After the protesters' attempt to capture Juliaca Airport, Aeropuertos Andinos del Perú (AAP) reported the suspension of operations.
"Our Inca Manco Cápac airport in Juliaca has suspended its operations as of today, January 6 in the afternoon, due to the acts of violence that have occurred and the lack of security in its vicinity that put the safety of our team and passengers at risk," read an AAP statement.
AAP indicated that it carries out the pertinent coordination with the airlines and the airport community to resume operations "in the short term" and "when the conditions exist that guarantee the safety" of its staff and passengers.
