Puno: Minsur Mine suspends operations (Spanish)

Protesters force mining company to suspend its operations and demand a formal document confirming the cessation of its activities.

The Minsur mining company suspended operations due to social pressure from a group of protesters from the districts of Crucero, Ituata, Usicayos, Coaza, Ajoyani in the province of Carabaya and Antauta, province of Melgar, north of Puno. According to the information, the citizens approached the Cumani checkpoint, entered the company's facilities and inspected the stoppage of the activity.

The leaders also requested a formal document in which the company confirms the suspension of 100% of its mining works and operations. This is because the country is 'on a fighting foot'.

For his part, engineer Nieto, representative of the Minsur security department, accepted the entry of a delegation to verify the plant and all mining operations that are suspended. He also presented the requested document.

The protesters warned that, if they find out about the continuity of work, they will adopt other more radical measures. For this reason, the Minsur San Rafael Mining Unit issued a statement, in which they inform about the temporary suspension of all their productive activities.

They also expressed their condolences to the families of the people who lost their lives. They also urged that this social problem be solved based on understanding and without violence.
