Puno: Directive of the Virgin of Candelaria will ask to suspend the state of emergency for 7 days (HBA Noticias [Spanish] - 1/16/2023)
The organizing committee of the festivities of the Virgen de la Candelaria will request the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) to consider an exception within the 30-day period established for the State of Emergency in Puno. This is to celebrate the activities in honor of the patron saint of the region.
As is known, the State of Emergency will be in force until February 15. Given this, the president of the Regional Federation of Folklore and Culture of Puno, Víctor Espino, announced to local media that he will ask to lift said measure on February 2, 4, 5, 11, 12, 13, and 14.
“Saturdays and Sundays are free here [in Puno], taxi drivers and merchants are working. I think that because of the issue of the Virgin they [the strikers] will understand here. In addition, we are going to send a document to the Government so that they make an exception in this supreme decree that establishes the emergency, "he explained.
After indicating that the activities in honor of the Blessed Virgin will be carried out "in any case", Espino assured that he had spoken with some Puno leaders who are promoting the demonstrations so that the traditional festivities do not suffer interruptions.
In addition, he assured that there is a prior agreement so that the dividends or benefits granted to the participating groups are donated to the families or relatives of the victims of protests against President Dina Boluarte.
"Between Tuesday and Wednesday, when an assembly of delegates will be held, we will be finalizing this proposal. We are talking about 220 artistic ensembles, from Sandia to Yunguyo. If we multiply that figure by the 500 soles that each group would receive, then the total would be the amount that would be donated," said the manager.
