Protests in Peru: train service to Machu Picchu suspended indefinitely due to damage to the tracks (Spanish)

Concession company Ferrocarril Trasandino reported that there is no train service in the sections: Cusco - Ollantaytambo, Machu Picchu - Hydroelectric and the Urubamba-Pachar branch.

Train service from Cusco to Machu Picchu is suspended indefinitely due to damage to the railway line caused by protesters, according to a statement from Ferrocarril Trasandino, which is the concessionaire company for this route.

In a statement, it indicates that there is no train service in the sections: Cusco -Ollantaytambo, Machu Picchu - Hydroelectric and the Urubamba - Pachar branch.

According to the document, the concessionaire has already notified companies that use this route to suspend their services; because the blockades are constant and even the rails were damaged so that the trains can no longer pass through some sections.

Vandalized Rails

A photograph shows how unknown people removed the rails and ties from their place and placed them to one side along a stretch of approximately twenty meters.

For its part, the Peru Rail company informed its passengers that they can request a refund of their money or reschedule their tickets for another date, for which it enabled two links on its website.

In addition, Ferrocarril Trasandino indicated that the train service for tourists on the Cusco - Puno - Arequipa route remains suspended.
