Rocío Leandro Melgar, President of the Front for the Defense of the People of Ayacucho (FREDPA), was arrested last night by the Peruvian National Police (PNP), by personnel from the Directorate Against Terrorism (DIRCOTE) Lima and the Public Ministry of Lima, for offences related to terrorism.
Leandro Melgar was detained at the intersection of 28 de Julio and San Martín, in Juliaca, in the company of the Vice President and the Secretary of the organization. After her arrest, police arbitrarily detained two UNSCH students at the gate of the University City, identified as Gómez Falcón Alex and Montoya Palomino Junior, students at the Law School.
It was learned that the Public Ministry had been investigating Leandro Melgar for several weeks and there would be an arrest warrant against her.
Through social networks, the legal advisor of the Ayacucho People's Defense Front Alan Tapia warned that the whereabouts of the detainees were unknown.
"We demand that the police allow the communication of their lawyers and that the unrestricted fundamental right to due process and the right to defense be respected," Tapia's statement said.
On the other hand, a group of residents and members of FREDPA went to the Huamanga Police Station to demand the release of Rocío Leandro and other detainees.
The Second Investigation Office of Huamanga was ordered to expand the preliminary investigation against Leandro Melgar, and those who are responsible for disturbances that occurred on December 15 and 16, 2022 and led to looting and burning of the offices of the Public Ministry, Power Judiciary, Bar Association, SAT - Huamanga, National Superintendency of Public Records (SUNARP) and the Telefónica office.
