Peru: regional governments urgently request an advancement of elections to 2023 (SERVINDI [Spanish] - 1/24/2023)

José Williams, President of the Congress and Dina Boluarte, President of Peru.

They consider that the best way out is not for Boluarte to resign and the President of Congress to assume her office; but that the deadlines are shortened for the Executive and Legislative to leave as soon as possible.

Servindi, January 23, 2023 - The National Assembly of Regional Governments (ANGR) of Peru called on the Executive and Congress to lay down their interests and coordinate so that the elections are held this 2023.

“There is no other way out, the clamor of the citizenry must be heard, leaving some processes such as primary elections for another time. The advancement of the elections is urgent”.

This was stated by the president of the ANGR and governor of Arequipa, Rohel Sánchez, in an interview offered to the Sunday news program Punto Final de Latina, on the night of Sunday, January 22.

During the interview, Sánchez justified the possibility that the elections take place this year, based on what the electoral authorities have indicated, that they could be held in December 2023.

"It has been stated that it can happen if the primary elections are eliminated, in four months the first round and in two months the second," said the regional authority.

On the other possibility that President Dina Boluarte resigns, and a new board of directors is elected in Congress, Sánchez considered that it is not the best path as it could aggravate the crisis.

"What we have seen is that this path is also going to generate more problems for us, it is also going to worsen it." The best thing is "to shorten the deadlines so that the elections are in 2023," he said.

In addition, he explained that in a context in which Congress has 88% disapproval, "it does not make any sense" that they seek to make reforms. "Let's leave that for a second moment, with a new Congress," she said.

Currently, in Congress there is approval in the first vote of a reform to advance the elections to April 2024 and that the new authorities are sworn in in July of that year.

For this reason, the ANGR raises the possibility that Congress reconsiders said reform and proposes a new project as soon as possible to advance the elections to 2023.

This new proposal, points out Sánchez, should be presented and approved before the end of the current legislature, on January 31; and receive the second endorsement vote at the beginning of February, in a second legislature.

With this proposal they will go on January 25 to a meeting that the regional governors have with the electoral bodies, Sánchez affirmed.
