Peru: Ministry of Health reports 67 hospitalized after protest injuries (Spanish)

The Superintendent of Land Transportation of People, Cargo, and Merchandise (SUTRAN) reports as of noon on Sunday, traffic remains blocked at sixty points on highways in six regions of the country: Puno, Cusco, Apurímac, Madre de Dios, Ica, and Amazonas.

Protest demonstrations in recent days in Peru have caused injuries to sixty-seven people, who are hospitalized in the regions of Puno, Arequipa, Lima, and Apurímac, while the blockades remain in sixty points located in six regions of the country, according to the official reports from the Ministry of Health (MINSA) and SUTRAN this Sunday.

MINSA reported that, because of the demonstrations against the government of Dina Boluarte, there are sixty-seven hospitalizations, the majority (sixty-two) in the Puno region in the city of Juliaca where on Friday and Saturday demonstrations and the attempt to take over the airport were concentrated.

Other hospitalized wounded are in Lima (three), where the most serious patients have been transferred, Arequipa (one) and Apurímac (one).

MINSA also reported that, to date, twenty-eight people have received a medical discharge, the majority (twenty-three) in Puno, and called for calm after reiterating their commitment to attend to people's health.

In Juliaca, protesters clashed with the Peruvian National Police in the vicinity of the airport, which has suspended its operations since Friday, and the agents used tear gas to disperse the protesters.

Protests and blocked roads

Several highways in the Puno region have been blocked since last December, when protests broke out over Boluarte's assuming Peru's presidency following the removal of Pedro Castillo.

Protest marches have resumed in the country since last Wednesday the 4th in several regions, with stoppages and roadblocks in at least eighteen provinces of the country, according to the latest report from the Ombudsman's Office.

On Saturday there were mobilizations and concentrations of protesters in the Peruvian provinces of Abancay, Andahuaylas, La Convención, Tambopata, Azángaro and San Román, according to the Ombudsman's Office.

This Sunday, the blockades have tightened in the Ica region, south of Lima, and next week marches and calls for measures of force have been announced in Lima and Cuzco.

According to the latest report from SUTRAN, the sixty points with restricted transit are distributed in the regions of Puno, Cusco, Apurímac, Madre de Dios, Ica, and Amazonas. Most of the blocked sections are in Puno.

Amid these protests, the ministerial cabinet headed by Alberto Otárola, will go to Congress next Tuesday to ask for a vote of confidence, a month after they were sworn in. (With information from EFE)
