Operation of trains on Ollantaytambo - Machu Picchu route still not authorized (Spanish)

The presence of demonstrators does not permit operation of trains to Machu Picchu

The presence of protesters on two sections of the railroad forces the suspension to be maintained for security reasons.

The presence of pickets of demonstrators at Kilometers 82 (Piscacucho) and 76 (Chilca), makes it impossible for train operations on the Ollantaytambo-Machu Picchu route, informed the company Ferrocarril Transandino SA, concessionaire of railways in the southern and southeast parts of Peru.

In a statement, the company reported the railway operator met with the community, and that they tried to fulfill requests of the authorities and population of the Machu Picchu District for an emergency train to evacuate stranded people.

Thus, they proceeded to inspect the railway in the section in question and observed the continued presence of protesters.

People's Safety

'Unfortunately, these events make it impossible to resume railway operations in this section' added the concessionaire noting the lack of safety conditions allowing the circulation of passenger trains and verified by the police authorities.

Therefore, "to guarantee the safety of people, we are forced to maintain the suspension of train operations," the statement said.

It also reported that the suspension of operations remains in the sections Cusco-Juliaca-Puno and Juliaca-Imata-Pillones-Arequipa of the southern railway.

A sector of the population of Cusco still abides by the indefinite stoppage called by organizations in the region. The access roads through the Sacred Valley of the Incas and the provinces of Canchis and Quispicanchi continue to be blocked.
