National Strike on January 4: Roadblocks reported in Arequipa, Cusco and Puno (Spanish)

The majority of the protesters are calling for the resignation of Dina Boluarte, the closure of Congress and the calling of a Constituent Assembly.

The National Strike began this Wednesday, January 4 in various regions of the south of the country. Since the early hours of the morning, blocked roads have been registered in the main towns of Puno, Cusco, and Arequipa.

Juliaca

In the city of Juliaca (Puno), the closure of Circunvalación avenue with pickets and transport vehicles was reported. The intersections of this main thoroughfare have also been taken over by merchants and carriers. This same scenario is recorded in the Maravillas Bridge and the road that allows the exit to Huancane, whose access is restricted even for motorcycles.

The majority of the region calls for the resignation of Dina Boluarte, the closure of the Congress of the Republic and the convening of a Constituent Assembly to draft a new Political Constitution. Meanwhile, a tiny group calls for the release of former president Pedro Castillo.

Exitosa verified that personnel from the Peruvian National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces (FF.AA.) guard the Inca Manco Cápac international airport. So far, there have been no clashes, although some protesters have chosen to burn tires.

Cusco

In Cusco, the suspension of interprovincial and urban transport services was reported, as well as attention in the main supply centers. The demonstrations have been registered peacefully, but there have also been closed roads.

From early on, the presence of pickets was reported around San Jerónimo, Calca and Ollantaytambo, which is the road that leads to the town of Machu Picchu. It should be noted that the train service to visit the archaeological complex is also suspended.

Arequipa

The White City woke up this Wednesday with the Añashuayco bridge, located in Cerro Colorado, completely blocked by civil construction workers and residents of the area. This bridge gives access to the northern area of Arequipa and connects roads that lead to Puno and Cusco.

The area was blocked with stones, cylinders, and tires. The protesters demand the "immediate" resignation of President Dina Boluarte.
