Mirtha Vásquez on the Defensoría del Pueblo: "The only institution that remains standing, defending democracy and human rights" (Spanish)

The former Premier described the entity's statement after the violent protests that took place yesterday as "strong, brave and humane".

Former Premier Mirtha Vásquez

The former President of the Council of Ministers Mirtha Vásquez affirmed this Sunday that the Defensoría del Pueblo (Ombudsman's Office) is the only institution that continues to defend democracy and the human rights of Peruvians, in the context of violent protests that are taking place throughout the country and resulting in deaths.

The former Premier showed her support for statements issued by the Defensoría, about recent events during demonstrations and described it as "strong, brave and humane."

"Strong, brave and human the pronouncement of the Ombudsman's Office, the only institution that remains standing, defending democracy and human rights, " wrote the former head of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) on her Twitter account.

What did the Ombudsman say?

The Ombudsman's Office issued a statement this afternoon after the violent protest that took place yesterday in downtown Lima, which left a deceased protester as a result.

"Peruvians and Peruvians periodically ratify, through popular vote, our faith in democracy. And we hope that this democracy considers the life of each one of us a priority [...] All of us, whose stories cannot be interrupted by bullets, stones, or fire," the statement begins.

"We note with regret that sensitivity to value life has been lost; therefore, it is exposed or attacked without considering its unique and unrepeatable condition," the Defensoría adds.

Along these lines, the entity highlights that the death of people in protests is not a "social cost" or "collateral damage", but rather constitutes "an irremediable affectation that plunges families into deep pain", as well as "deepens the emotional and cultural rifts between all of us.

In the same way, the Defensoría affirms that in this scenario of notorious urgency, the "morally most repulsive way to act" is to let people die when "you have in your hands the political power to pacify and change the tragic course of these days."

"The Legislative Power and the Executive Power can do it. Every day that passes, someone's life is in danger, and democracy - that great republican yearning - is undoing before our eyes," the Ombudsman added.
