Machu Picchu: Defense Front and Unions Agree to Suspend Protest Measures and Talk with the Minister of Culture (RPP Noticias [Spanish] - 1/3/2023)
Minister of Culture, Leslie Urteaga, considers it positive that social organizations see dialogue as the best solution to address their problems.
Minister of Culture Leslie Urteaga Peña welcomed the decision of the Defense Front, Chamber of Commerce, tourism unions, Producers Union, craft market unions, and other unions of the town of Machu Picchu, to suspend the protest measures of the January 4th and commit to dialogue.
“Yesterday, Monday, January 2, we had coordination with some organizations of the Machu Picchu District, which had the intention of joining this stoppage (of January 4) and we have reached an agreement. They have indicated that, precisely, through the dialogue they see the best solution to address their problems in the management, preservation, and the economic development of Machu Picchu town, in relation to our archaeological zone,” she said.

Through a statement, the Machu Picchu Interests Defense Front (FREDIM), with the signature of President David Moreno Riveros, informed the national authorities and the regional and national press, which given the commitment of the Ministry of Culture, through its head Leslie Urteaga, in scheduling a meeting with the organizations of Machu Picchu, FREDIM would temporarily lift the protest measures with the purpose of discussing the problems of the Cusco District.
The Minister of Culture informed FREDIM that she has arranged for Ministry staff to hold a virtual meeting as soon as possible and announced that she will visit the town between January 15 and 30, 2023 to hold a broad meeting with all organizations.
“The purpose is to organize and schedule an extended meeting where we can listen to each other, understand each other, and advance on the most urgent issues that our most emblematic cultural resource requires; for which the respective coordination will also be carried out with the representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism,” said the Minister Peña.
