Juliaca: 22 police officers injured stopping acts of vandalism during demonstrations (El Peruano [Spanish] - 1/7/2023)
Victims of violence. A total of twenty-two agents of the National Police were injured during the acts of vandalism that occurred this afternoon, during the failed attempt to take over the Inca Manco Capac airport, in the city of Juliaca, in the Puno region.
The attacks began around noon, when a group of people used various homemade firearms and attacked the forces of order with stones. Other demonstrators set fire to a PNP Casspir armored vehicle, destroying part of the perimeter fence of the air terminal.
The injured police officers were transferred to the PNP Juliaca Medical Post, of the Police Health Directorate (DIRASPOL), and to the Carlos Monge Medrano Hospital, of the Ministry of Health, while two police officers with injuries were admitted to the Anglo-American Clinic and the San Pablo Clinic, respectively, in the same city.
By 9:30 p.m., eight PNP members were sent home for medical rest and three of them had already been discharged. Three other injured will be transferred to the National Hospital PNP "Luis N. Sáenz", in Lima, where they will arrive this Saturday, January 7, between 8 and 9 in the morning, according to the Police Ombudsman's Office.
Rejection of violence
Under the premise of full respect for human rights but fulfilling the mission of recovering order and protecting public property, the police contingent, with the support of members of the Armed Forces, prevented the demonstrators from taking the runway of the Juliaca airport. The latter continued to attack the forces of order until late at night.
Due to these new acts of violence, the airport suspended its operations to safeguard the lives of staff and passengers.
The Ministry of Interior deeply regretted that members of the PNP and citizens of Puno were injured during these regrettable and unnecessary displays of violence.
Likewise, the Ministry condemned the aggressions and damages caused to public and private property, a fact that ends up affecting all Peruvians.
In that sense, the population is urged to remain calm and to demonstrate peacefully, without affecting the rights of other citizens.
The Interior Ministry, together with other entities of the national government, continue to work to safeguard the integrity of families living in the areas surrounding the Juliaca airport.
