Ica: Police and military clear blocked sections of the Panamericana Sur Highway (Spanish)

After the road was unblocked, the heavy-duty vehicles began to circulate freely after being stranded for more than eleven days.

There were no clashes during the operation to clear the Highway

A military contingent of the Peruvian Army arrived this morning in the Ica region to support the members of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) in the work of unblocking the lanes of the Panamericana Sur Highway, in the Barrio Chino and Expansión Urbana sectors.

On its Twitter account, the Ministry of Defense specified that, aboard troop trucks, the military contingent moved from Lima to the Peruvian Air Force (FAP) base in the Ica province of Pisco.

At this time of day, the only stretch of the Panamericana Sur Highway that was blocked was Kilometer 263, in the area known as Barrio Chino, in the Salas Guadalupe district.

According to the RPP Noticias correspondent in the region, up to a thousand police officers from the Special Services Unit (USE) have been deployed in the Bario Chino area. Of them, a total of six hundred guard the direction from south to north of the road.

Meanwhile, the personnel of the Armed Forces (FF.AA.). deployed in the other direction of the Highway. By averaging 12:00 pm, both the personnel of the Armed Forces. as the PNP troops awaited the orders to clear kilometer 263 of the Panamericana Sur highway, obstructed with tires and stones placed by the protesters.

Initially, a commission of high command of the Air Force tried to talk with the demonstrators to inform them what the procedure would be if they did not agree to unblock this section of the Panamericana Sur on their own initiative.

Law enforcement cleared the Highway 

At around 1:30 p.m., the PNP and the Army, guarded by armored units, took control of Kilometer 263 of the Panamericana Sur highway.

RPP Noticias was able to learn that there were no clashes between the FF.AA. and the protesters, who stood on the side of the road.
