Huancavelica: Vandals stone and burn the house of the Regional Governor (Spanish)
Violent action by a group of vandals was carried out after clashes between protesters and police officers.
This Wednesday, a group of vandals set fire to the home of the Huancavelica Regional Governor, Leoncio Huayllani, as part of the protests taking place in that region, following the attempted coup.
It should be noted that this action was carried out after various clashes between protesters and Peruvian National Police agents were reported, also after law enforcement launched tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters.
According to the information collected by Exitosa in Huancavelica, the people who participated in the demonstrations asked the regional authorities to pronounce themselves on the situation facing the country and in favor of the protests that are being carried out against the Government. Then, they went to the home of the Regional Governor and threw stones, also setting fire to the main doors of the home.
It should be noted that, after these acts of violence, injured police officers and demonstrators were reported, as well as detainees at the Santa Ana police station in Huancavelica.
Likewise, as verified by Exitosa, so far, no police reinforcements have been registered at Governor Huayllani's home, despite the fire caused by a group of vandals this afternoon. In addition, the protesters continue to meet in the Plaza del Barrio Santa Ana requesting the release of the detainees.
For its part, the Regional Government of Huancavelica issued a statement, in which it expressed its support for "peaceful social struggles" and asked the Executive and Legislative Powers to hold new general elections "in the shortest possible time."
"The regional governor of Huancavelica (...) will demand that the Government and Congress carry out an election process in the shortest possible time, as well as promote the construction of a joint country agenda to establish a way out of the political, economic crisis and social status of the country", reads the statement released by the authorities.
