'Go to the farm!': March for peace in Cusco ends in fight and racist shouting (Spanish)
Citizens who went out to "march for peace" ended up insulting and denigrating other protesters they ran into.
On Friday, January 13, citizens of Cusco gathered to march for peace, demanding respect for their right to work and free transit. A march that was attended by Javier Vela, general of the Seventh Cusco Police Macro Region, Eduardo Poblete, Cusco Crime Prevention prosecutor, a group of police officers and dozens of citizens, most of them wearing white polo shirts.
The march began at 9:00 am in the Larapa sector, San Jerónimo district. There were protesters for peace and others who blocked the road demanding the resignation of President Dina Boluarte and the Congress verbally confronted each other for several minutes; and after several minutes, the incident did not escalate after the arrival of the Peruvian National Police.
It was in this context that some protesters began to utter racist insults and even share them publicly through social networks, going viral and generating widespread rejection. "To inform you a little, so that you can see they are still there, we have been protesting for peace. Because what these Indians, thieves, these criminals want to do is go up to Soto's house (Congressman from Cusco) and they cannot do that..." Alejandra Urbina Chuyacama expressed in a public story on Instagram.
Discrimination
La República spoke with lawyer Mayk Pilares, who said that Urbina Chuyacama's expressions were clearly discriminatory. "There is no justification to express yourself in a derogatory way against another group of people, we all deserve respect," he said.
In this sense, the lawyer Aaron Medina highlighted that, during the peace march, in addition to violence and racist insults, there had also been arbitrary arrests with the participation of the Peruvian National Police and the Cusco Crime Prevention Prosecutor's Office.
"We have seen how, in addition to racist insults, from some protesters; Simultaneously, the police officers began to arrest several people. That fact is clearly an act of abuse and discrimination. These gentlemen have come with a position of gamonal or superior; the detainees are humble people” expressed Aaron Medina.
