Cusco: Restart of Protests Causes Cancellation of 80% of Tourist Packages (Spanish)
President of the Association of Tourist Agencies (AATC Cusco) Marco Ochoa stated that protests have resulted in the cancellation of 80% of tourist packages and that the local tourism sector is losing up to 1.8 million dollars per day.
The cancellations are due to the resumption of protests due to the macro-regional strike that the south of the country according to Ochoa.
The representative of the tourism sector stated that despite their efforts to recover the tourist flow, they were unable to do so due to social conflicts that generate daily losses of 1.8 million dollars only for the tourism sector.
The representative of the tourism sector added that his hope of recovering for the end of the year holidays was not possible, even though tourists continue to choose Cusco as their main destination.
Another sign of the economic impact on the tourist sector of the imperial region is what happened with the return of around five million soles to visitors who purchased entrance tickets to Machu Picchu, but because they could not visit the Llaqta Inka some days in December of last year, that amount was returned to visitors. This information was provided by the Director of Culture of Cusco, Claudia Miranda Sotomayor.
In the Imperial City there have been demonstrations in the historic center of the city, as well as in surrounding districts, although these took place peacefully. More mobilizations are expected for tomorrow, although the participation of carriers and market traders has not been confirmed.
