Cusco: Railway operations resume in the Ollantaytambo – Machu Picchu section (Spanish)
Ferrocarril Trasandino SA, concessionaire of the southern and southeastern railway of Peru, announced today (January 9) - starting at 4:00 pm - the railway operations were authorized in the section Ollantaytambo - Machupicchu - Hidroeléctrica, which were paralyzed due to the protests against the government of Presidenty Dina Boluarte.
According to the Company, the announcement is possible after having verified "the good condition" of the railway and confirming the safety conditions "with the corresponding authorities."
On January 4, PeruRail and Ferrocarril Transandino suspended their train service due to the announcement of new mobilizations and protests in various regions of the country.
Although the resumption of the Ollantaytambo - Machupicchu - Hidroeléctrica section was announced, operations of the Cusco - Juliaca - Puno tracks, of the southern railway will continue to be suspended because the protests continue in the Altiplano Region.
For the third consecutive day, on Sunday afternoon dozens of protesters tried to violently enter the facilities of the Inca Manco Cápac Airport (CUS). In Juliaca, more than thirty police and civilians were injured according to a report by the Ombudsman.
