Protesters partially destroyed the PeruRail train station in the Huaroc district. The damage included a hole in one of the perimeter walls. PeruRail concessionaire of the railway on the Cusco, Ollantaytambo, Machupicchu route and on the Cusco-Puno route had to cancel all its operations.

Likewise, there was a violent confrontation between protesters who wanted to enter the train station and the Peruvian National Police (PNP). Finally, protesters dispersed, and the police remained in the vicinity.

Tweet from PeruRail (@PeruRail_Trains):

SUSPENSION OF OUR OPERATIONS FROM JANUARY 12

We inform our passengers, operators of tourism and the community in general that, to guarantee the safety and care of passengers and workers, starting today Thursday January 12, we are under the obligation to suspend the operations of all our train services on the route to and from Machu Picchu, until further notice.

The suspension of our train services is given in compliance with the notification of the concessionaire for the suspension of railway operations until further notice between Cusco - Machupicchu - Hidroeléctrica, due to the strong protests that are taking place in Cusco.

We regret the inconvenience these announcements generate for our passengers; however, they are due to situations beyond the control of our company, and we reiterate that, despite the protests in Cusco, we seek to prioritize the safety of passengers and workers.

PeruRail will proceed to change and relocate the passengers affected by this measure, providing all the facilities for those who wish to change the date of their trip according to the availability of services.

Passengers who wish to change the travel date may request it at no additional cost at all our points of sale in Lima and Cusco that can be located at the following link: https://bit.ly/3k2mMtK

And if they decide to cancel their trip, they can request the return of their tickets through the refund form published on our website: bit.ly/3GCqnGK

Modifications for travel agencies may be made at our offices at the Wanchaq Station in Cusco and through the reservations area, while returns must be managed through the web sales and reservation system (Travel Studio).

The re-establishment of the operation of our train services will follow notification of authorization for the circulation of trains between Cusco - Machupicchu - Hidroeléctrica.

Any change in this measure will be communicated in a timely manner by our company. For more information and assistance contact us through our Call Center at the telephone number: (+51) 01 6254848 or through your sales executive.

Cusco Airport also suspends its operations.

Through a statement, the Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation (CORPAC) announced on Thursday the closure of the Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUS) in Cusco.

This measure is given after receiving confirmed information from the provincial prosecutor and the National Police General that "a mob of protesters has been violently confronting law enforcement with the intention of affecting the air terminal facilities."

The company explained that the decision was made to ensure the safety of users. For this reason, to safeguard the integrity and safety of passengers, users, the public, and our collaborators, air operations at our Cusco terminal are suspended, since their safety is not guaranteed," the statement read.
