Cusco: more than thirty injured, one dead, following clashes between police and protesters on Avenue July 28 (Diario El Sol de Cusco [Spanish] - 1/12/2023)
One person was killed and thirty-four injured so far in clashes that occurred on Wednesday as part of the protests against the Government in the city of Cusco.
The conflict took place on Avenida 28 de Julio, located in the Wanchaq district, where a group of protesters had been trying to reach the Velasco Astete International Airport (CUS). However, troops prevented them from advancing and the protestors began to throw stones.
As a result of this confrontation, six members of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) and twenty-eight demonstrators were injured, according to reports by the Cusco Regional Health Management. Most of the injured police officers had to be helped by their colleagues on motorcycles.
Injured were referred to Hospitals and Health Center
All the injured have been referred to the different hospitals in the city such as the regional hospital, the Antonio Lorena Hospital, among others.
In this regard, the Cusco Crime Prevention Prosecutor, Eduardo Poblete Barbieri, indicated that one injured officer will require a craniotomy, since he suffered a severe injury to the head from a stone.
Editor's note: the dead protestor has been identified as Jlinner Candia Guevara, President of the Provincial Federation of Peasants of Anta, due to the impact of a projectile during the protests. According to the report from the Antonio Lorena Hospital, the victim was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with a diagnosis of thoracic abdominal trauma. At 8:50 pm Guevara passed away.
Call to Protesters
Prosecutor Barbieri also indicated that so far there are eight detainees for this demonstration and that they have already talked with the leaders who were told they had the right to protest without violating people's rights. Despite this, he regretted that those who protested sought to arrive violently at the airport.
"At this moment, what we have exhorted the population. We have spoken with the leaders in the morning, and we told them that they can protest throughout the city of Cusco, and we will accompany them with full responsibility for the case, but I do not understand why their belligerent intention of wanting to enter the airport. The Police and the Prosecutor's Office have reached an agreement: detainees yes, injured no, much less deaths,' he said.
