Cathedral of Lima: mass celebrated for those who died in demonstrations (Spanish)

The Archbishop of Lima said that "the people cry out for peace and rectification of acts" to end the violence.

Archbishop of Lima, Monsignor Carlos Castillo, today presided over mass for the more than forty deaths during the social protests in the country. He indicated that the people cry out for peace and rectification of acts to end the violence.

In a mass in the Cathedral of Lima, in memory of those who died in the protests, the monsignor said that the deaths of these compatriots should unite all Peruvians in pain, alluding to the political polarization of recent months that has become in a violent social conflict.

"Brothers and sisters, this Sunday that we have concluded some very difficult weeks in our homeland, we want today to dedicate this mass to our deceased [...] all of them are our deceased, there is no death of another, we are all Peruvians. For this reason, together with the pain of all our brothers in different provinces and our brothers from the National Police, we are going to pray today, remembering them, because they are worthy children of God that we cannot forget," said Castillo.

Open the church to the pain of the people.

The Archbishop referred to a photo that showed a crowd in the main square of Juliaca next to the coffins of seventeen deceased during the demonstrations on January 9 in that city of Puno and pointed out that this Sunday's mass is held to share that suffering.

"When we see the photo that came to us from Juliaca with the crowd and its row of coffins that were taken to the middle of the square but placed in front of the main church (although the church was closed), we can understand that some circumstances have prevented it from being opened. But we have the duty, as a Church, to open our churches to the pains of our people, to their sensitivity, to their searches, just as we also open them to their joys," he said.

"For this reason, we are not only doing this Mass as the Church of Lima, but united with all the national churches and the suffering with whom we would like to share their suffering, family members, police brothers, doctors and, above all, the enormous number of young people who have suffered death," he added.

The Archbishop pointed out that there are peaceful ways to resolve the main demands of the population that have been present in the demonstrations.

"There are peaceful ways to organize ourselves to resolve the great demands of each poor region of Peru. We do not need to liquidate the State that has cost so much to build, and which petty and selfish interests currently opposed," he said.

Along these lines, he asked to perfect "what we have built" and correct "what was built wrong" with calm, awareness, and reflection.

Monsignor Carlos Castillo considered that the tragedy that occurred in recent weeks invites Peruvians to abandon the violent path, to proceed with intelligence, truth, and to detect those who give wrong orders or slogans.

At the end of the homily, the Archbishop of Lima prayed before the images of those who died in the protests. (Source: EFE)
