Carlos Loayza: The situation in the country has affected the confidence and security of tourists (Spanish)

The General Manager of National Chamber of Tourism of Peru (CANATUR), Carlos Loayza, indicated that the protests have caused economic losses in the tourism sector.

In an interview with Exitosa, Carlos Loayza, General Manager of Canatur, spoke about the situation of the tourism sector in the context of the protests that are taking place in the different regions of the country.

“The economic impact of tourism in each of the regions. In Puno, according to figures from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, it has a positive impact of 791,000 soles per day. That is to say that, in a day of paralysis, that amount would be lost. In Cusco, the daily economic impact is S/2,346,320”, he pointed out.

He also indicated that tourism in the country "has been one of the activities hardest hit by the pandemic" and considered that some measures implemented by the authorities to stop the spread of Covid-19 were "inadequate and unnecessary." Along these lines, he considered that there was a "terrible management" of the health emergency and that this affected the tourism sector.

“An undue, inadequate, unnecessary confinement in many cases, a series of rules and regulations that made no sense, and that made what we had a good step forward in attracting incoming tourism, are the foreigners who come to enjoy of our natural, cultural, and other wonders. This tourism was reduced by about 10%” said Loayza in Exitosa.

In addition, he pointed out that tourism is a "decentralized and inclusive" activity, but that the country lacks "trust, security, certainty" so that tourists can be sure to visit the country. In this sense, he indicated that the authorities should prevent "people from seeing Machu Picchu or the south as an unsafe area" and promote dialogue.

“In the conditions in which we were, after the pandemic hit, we needed to provide a lot of technical and professional capacity to the competent bodies, to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, but unfortunately at the beginning of the last government, the pieces could not be fine-tuned. quickly," he said.
