Cajamarca: Ronderos agree not hold 2023 Carnaval 2023 due to ongoing social crisis (Spanish)
Authorities of Cajamarca's thirteen municipalities asked to support this measure.
The President of the Provincial Federation of Ronderos of Chota (Cajamarca) Aladino Burga reported that last Sunday in a popular assembly it was unanimously decided not to allow the 2023 Carnival, in support of the protests against the government of President Dina Boluarte and because Peru is mourning the death of more than fifty people during ongoing protests in the country's southern regions. The leader pointed out that this Saturday, January 28, they will hold a conclave in which they will ratify the agreement.
In an interview with La República, Burga stated that the Federation agreed not to allow the carnival because they consider that Peru is going through a serious political and social crisis.
"The social upheaval has not ended, the protests in the south continue and where unfortunately more than fifty people died during the mobilizations, so what could we celebrate?" Burga said.
Along these lines, he stated that an assembly will be held this Saturday with the different Rondero committees to ratify the decision not to allow the Cajamarca Carnival. "The leaders will present the grounds they considered to oppose the activities alluding to carnival," he noted,
In the case of the province of Chota, he affirmed that they would send a document to Aníbal Gálvez, the Mayor of the municipality, requesting an agreement with municipal councilors.
Carnival budget for floats questioned
For his part, Edilberto Vigil, a member of the Collective for Dignity and Vote for Popular Defense, questioned the enormous economic resources that the Provincial Municipality of Cajamarca disburses in development of the Carnival.
"We have a Mayor (Joaquín Ramírez) in collusion with the Fujimoristas who spends on floats and queens for the carnival," Edilberto Vigil said.
In response. the General Manager of the municipality of Cajamarca, Wilder Narro, said that between January 18 and February 22, 2023, 40,000 visitors were expected for the Carnival, which normally generates income of up to S/40 million for the Cajamarca Region.
