Ayacucho: defense fronts seek release of Rocío Leandro and her leaders (Spanish)

The Defense Fronts of the south of Ayacucho, through a statement, requested the prompt release of the President of the Front for the Defense of the People of Ayacucho (FREDPA), Rocío Leandro, who along with her leaders were arrested on January 13 by personnel from the Directorate against Terrorism (DIRCOTE).

“We condemn the arrest of the FREDPA leaders and university students, for which we demand their immediate release because they are not vandals or harassers, they are social fighters. We call on the Defense Fronts and other grassroots social organizations to denounce the political persecution, criminalization of the protest, and terrorizing of our leaders," the statement said.

According to the First Provincial Corporate Criminal Prosecutor of Huamanga, in charge of Itala Farfán Wilson, Rocío Leandro and FREDPA are being investigated for the crime against public tranquility and public peace, in the form of disturbances, "to the detriment of the Peruvian State - Public Ministry, Judiciary, Telefónica, Ayacucho Bar Associations, SAT and SUNARP”.

It is worth noting that the preliminary proceedings have a term of fifteen days, which will be completed during this week, where the Prosecutor's Office could request preventive detention against Rocío Leandro and the other six people, who would have been arbitrarily detained.

On the other hand, it should be noted that after the arrest of Rocío Leandro, the members that make up FREDPA have continued with the marches and mobilizations, to demand her release.

However, her legal situation will be defined in the following days. At the moment those intervened remain in police custody in the city of Lima.

The Third Criminal Chamber of National Appeals scheduled for this Monday, January 23, the hearing in which it will analyze Rocío Leandro's appeal against her 15-day preliminary detention.
