Arequipa: Restricted Hours in Avelino Market Due to Protests (Spanish)

The merchants of the Andrés Avelino Caceres Platform, the largest Market in Arequipa, will have restricted hours tomorrow, January 4, from 3 to 8 in the morning, because they will join the indefinite strike that to demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the closure of Congress, advancement of general elections, and the call for a Constituent Assembly.

The representative of the merchants, Jhazmani Cayo, reported that during the first three days of the stoppage, that is, Wednesday, January 4, Thursday, January 5, and Friday January 6, more than 5,000 members of the platform have agreed to abide by different security measures starting at 8 a.m. with protests, common pots, and peaceful marches.

During these first days, citizens will only be able to buy food in the morning. On the third day after the protests began, the merchants indicated they will evaluate the forcefulness of the mobilizations and accordingly, may extend restriction of opening hours.

Regarding the supply, the leader reported that the merchants have been supplied with products that will last at least a week in total. After this time, some food arriving from other regions will become scarce. It should be remembered that 95% of the fruit comes from the north, while beef and lamb come from Puno and Cusco.

Río Seco Market

For his part, President of the Río Seco Market Cristóbal Huayapa, reported that the vendors of this market agreed not to support the measure of the leaders of the South of the Country.

He said that they agree to give the new President six months to work for the Country. Furthermore, they refuse to participate in the strike because they need to work.
