Arequipa: New LPG Shortage Due to Road Blockades in Ica (Spanish)

Once again, the Arequipa region will run out of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in the next few hours due to the blockades that occurred Thursday on the Panamericana Sur Highway, near Bario Chino, in Ica, as part of the restart of the protests demanding the closure of Congress and new general elections.

Magno Salas Montiel, vice president of the Association of Gas Vendors in Arequipa, explained that currently vehicular LPG is quite scarce in the city. Now, the few service stations that have been selling it are those that have a plant, the rest have already stopped selling LPG and gasohol. This situation will extend to the rest of the vendors if they do not clear the roads and allow the tankers that load LPG at the Melchorita (Pisco) plant to pass and distribute it in the southern regions.

The vehicular gas shortage can be seen in the long queues that dozens of vehicles join from the early hours of the day to be able to recharge their tanks at service stations. For example, yesterday at the Primax station, located on the Andrés Avelino Cáceres commercial platform, there was a queue of more than thirty cars, and it was not yet eight in the morning.

Home LPG

Regarding household gas, Salas Montiel pointed out that in Arequipa there is still LPG, and this could supply families for up to a maximum of ten days. However, he stressed that everything depends on demand.

Montiel explained there are families that are buying more gas than they need; and some companies because some are hiding their product to put it on sale when there is a shortage and higher prices.

It should be remembered that until January 6, it was projected that the LPG supply in Arequipa would normalize between 85% and 90%. However, with these new blockades and the stranded tankers, it is estimated that it will be at least another week before the supply of gasohol stabilizes in the region.
