Which airports in the country are closed due to the protests?

The protests in recent days have forced the closure of airports in the regions of Apurímac, Arequipa, Puno, Cusco and Ayacucho, to guarantee the integrity of passengers and workers, as some have already been the target of attacks.

The first airport that suspended its operations was that of Andahuaylas (Apurímac), since protesters seriously damaged the runway and essential equipment to provide air navigation services.  In addition, they set fire to the transmitter room and the fuel room, and threateningly surrounded the air terminal.

Another airport that remains closed is the Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón in the city of Arequipa due to the serious effects on its infrastructure, such as the destruction of the perimeter fence, the security signage and the removal of part of the edges of the landing strip, among other damages.

The situation is similar at the Teniente Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco.  A group of people broke into its facilities and tried to enter violently, for which reason it was ordered to be closed until today, Thursday, December 15, at 11:59 p.m.

The Inca Manco Cápac airport, located in the city of Juliaca, Puno region, has also been inoperative since yesterday due to attacks by protesters who tried to take it over and damaged the perimeter fence.

Aeropuertos Andinos del Perú (AAP) reported last night the closure of the Alfredo Mendívil Duarte Airport in the city of Ayacucho, starting at 00:00 on Thursday, December 15, to secure its infrastructure.  The Armed Forces warned that a group of protesters seek to break into the air terminal, putting the safety of passengers, staff and the entire airport community at risk.

The suspension of operations at the aforementioned airports —which are heavily guarded by the National Police— harms passengers who must reschedule their flights and postpone their arrival at their final destination even if they have an emergency.  At the same time, economic losses in the tourism sector continue to increase.
