The south of Peru will run out of panettones this Christmas (RPP [Spanish] - 12/19/2022)
The Peruvian Association of Bakery and Pastry Entrepreneurs (ASPAN) warned that two million panettones cannot be delivered because of the protests.
The south of Peru continues in conflict because of the protests for early elections and this would affect the Christmas dinners of the population since around two million units cannot be distributed.
According to the Peruvian Association of Bakery and Pastry Entrepreneurs (ASPAN), heavy cargo vehicles are prevented from reaching their destinations because of the blockades. The problem originates in the capitals of each region, because from there the panettones must be mobilized; however, due to the blockades, heavy cargo carriers do not want to circulate for fear of being attacked.
“This week more than 2 million panettone have to be delivered to the government provinces; However, I understand from the colleagues in the capital cities that they have problems being able to take to the corners of the internal provinces because the roads are blocked and there is a lot of risk”,
Cusco, for example, should send its panteones to the jungle, but so far this distribution has not materialized. The same thing happened in Ayacucho, Arequipa, Tacna, Moquegua, La Libertad, etc.
According to Pantoja, from the first day of the protest, the losses began with the extra cost generated by the penalty represented by the delay in delivery. For each unit there are eighteen soles at risk; that is, around S/ 36 million.
"That is why we ask that the roads be opened, such as humanitarian aid of food not only panteón, but all food so that it is not spoiled because it is harmful. If this is not solved in the coming days, those panettones will have to be sold in the capital (Lima)," he explained.
