Protests in Peru LIVE: Another Death Confirmed during protests in Arequipa (La República [Spanish] - 12/19/2022)


The protests in Peru continue for more than a week since the presidential vacancy of Pedro Castillo was approved in Congress. Every day, dozens of people take to the streets of Lima, Apurímac, Arequipa, Cusco, Puno, Ayacucho and other regions to ask for the early elections and the closure of Congress. At certain points, citizens block roads to raise their voices. For this, current president Dina Boluarte tries to put out the demonstrations with different actions, including decreeing a State of Emergency and the subsequent curfew in fifteen provinces of the country; however, the death toll from clashes between protesters and members of the National Police and Armed Forces increases with the passing of hours. Juliaca social organizations give a truce until January 4, 2023.

In an emergency meeting held on the afternoon of this December 19th between the representatives of the various social organizations, associations of merchants, transporters and other unions of Juliaca, it was agreed to give a truce in the indefinite strike until January 4, 2023, then to resume with more force the measures of struggle demanding the closure of Congress, the resignation of Dina Boluarte and new Elections.

MTC provides a humanitarian flight to assist passengers stranded in Juliaca.

On the afternoon of this Monday, December 19, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) provided a humanitarian flight to serve approximately 60 passengers stranded due to the closure of operations due to protests in the province of Juliaca (Puno). The plane landed at the airport at 4.45 pm

"The MTC reaffirms its commitment and concern to serve the largest number of people affected by the closure of operations at airports," it said in the statement.

Curfew is suspended in the provinces of La Libertad and Ayacucho.

The Government of Dina Boluarte has promulgated, through a Supreme Decree, that the curfew has been suspended in the province of Virú, in La Libertad and in Cangallo and Huamanga, in Ayacucho.

Cusco: More than 2,000 protesters in Acomayo marched against the Government.



More than 2,000 citizens of Acomayo arrived in Cusco to demonstrate and demand the government attend to their claims. 

The march began in the San Jerónimo district, going through La Cultura avenue, Tupac Amaru square, Limacpampa square and culminating in the city's Plaza Mayor. During the tour there were no violent acts or incidents unlike in past days.

In addition to the Acomayo mobilization, another group of citizens gathered from 3:00 pm demanding an end to the violence, dressed in white polo shirts.

Puno: bus carriers suspend ticket sales to join the strike.

Puno 's interregional service carriers suspended the sale of tickets to the southern regions. In this way, they confirmed their participation in the indefinite strike due to the death of more than twenty people during the demonstrations. 

Wilber Ticona, representative of the San Martín company, told La República that the last busses to Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna will leave this Monday, December 19th between 8:00 pm and 10:30 pm. 

On the other hand, there have been no sales of tickets to Lima for a week, while there are no buses available to Cusco due to blockages in various sections of the route.

Arequipa airport will be without night flights for about three months.

The Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón Airport (AQP) in Arequipa resumed operations this Monday, after the assault on its runway carried out a week ago by a mob. However, the operations will only be with natural light due to the damage suffered by the night navigation equipment, the repair of which would take at least three months.

Tito Luque, administrator of the Airport said that CORPAC informed him that the repair of the night systems would take 3 months, due to the spare parts that must be obtained from abroad.

Meanwhile, the Airport will try to make the most of the daylight hours. This Monday, the last flight left at 5.40 pm, bound for Santiago de Chile by Jet Smart.

La Libertad: peasant ronderos announce road seizure for December 26th.

A new stoppage on the Sierra Liberteña highway was announced by ronderos of the Simbal and Poroto districts to demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, new general elections and Constitutional reform.

In dialogue with La República, the provincial vice president of the peasant patrols, Elki Benites Dionicio, stated that the demonstration will be peaceful and there are between 500 to 1,000 patrols from the areas of the Liberteño Andes that will join the indefinite protest.

Arequipa: confirm death of a person during protests in Chala.

In Arequipa, a man lost his life on the afternoon of this Monday, December 19, during clashes that occurred when the Peruvian National Police (PNP) tried to unblock the tracks in the Chala area. The fact was confirmed by sources from the Caravelí prosecutor's office.

The death occurred at kilometer 619 of the Panamericana Sur in the district of Arequipa and was confirmed by sources from the Caravelí prosecutor's office.
