Poverty Levels in Peru Not Reduced in 2022 Warns Minister of Economy and Finance (Spanish)

Minister of Economy and Finance Alex Contreras, during presentation of the 'Con Punche Peru' plan, pointed out that, because of inflation and the slow economic 2022 saw no reduction in Peru's poverty rate. More than eight million Peruvians remain in a situation of vulnerability and poverty.

“This year poverty will not be reduced due to the impact of higher inflation and lower growth. The objective of 'Impulso Perú' and Con Punche Perú is to recover and energize the growth rate of the Peruvian economy with specific interventions," said Contreras.

In 2021, poverty levels stood at 25.9%, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). In this sense, 8,547,000 Peruvians were in need last year.

Although in 2020 poverty levels reached 30.1%, affecting close to 9.9 million people, for 2021 there was a decline of 4.2%. However, this figure has not yet come close to pre-pandemic data of 2019 and continued with a 5.7% higher percentage. For 2022, the trend remains the same.
