Machu Picchu: Ministry of Culture will maintain limits on visitors in 2023 (Spanish)
Only 4044 people will be able to enter a day until June 30, 2023. The purpose is to protect the world heritage site.
The Ministry of Culture announced this Thursday, September 29, that the number of 4,044 daily visitors to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu will be maintained until June 30, 2023.
The measure will be in force from January 1, 2023, complying with the recommendations for its preservation by UNESCO.
“The commitment that we assume from the resolution that approves the capacity for Machu Picchu, is already issued. We have it here in our hands. I want to inform you that we are approving the extension of the term established in Article 1 of Resolution 224 of 2022, until June 30, 2023. It's six more months, but it doesn't mean we're going to stay there. Towards the month of February, we must continue working to solve complex situations such as the management of monuments,” said the head of the Culture sector, Leslie Urteaga Peña.
“We will open the dialogue with this first action that we urgently need to resolve. I have a week in office as minister and we need to integrate. We want to form a working group with the groups in relation to the place, and convene and articulate with the new local authorities, and involve public and private institutions and the citizen himself, for its preservation”, she emphasized.
The Culture sector head remarked that the decision to maintain the capacity in 2023 has the approval of the corresponding areas, because the 'llaqta' of Machu Picchu, in this last period, does not show any deterioration after the increase in the number of visitors. which was established in July 2022.
In addition, the Ministry of Culture indicated that, through those responsible for the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park, it has been complying with the llaqta mitigation work, which, it said is corroborated by the bimonthly technical inspections.
“The Ministry of Culture has informed UNESCO of the Resolution. Likewise, it urges public and private entities and citizens in general to join efforts for the improvement, protection and sustainable management of this important cultural heritage recognized as world heritage site.”
