Government Deploys Military to New Protests in South (Spanish)
Protests restart on January 4.
Minister of the Interior Víctor Rojas admitted that his portfolio has learned that protests will increase in the south of the country. “We have the information that they are going to increase in the southern zone. I will be traveling to Arequipa, Cusco, and Puno to strengthen the services,” he declared to the press.
Faced with this panorama, Herrera announced that actions with the National Police will be reinforced in these regions to guarantee the free movement of the population. "Not with a desire to repress, but to prevent what could happen," he said.
During a macro-regional meeting of social organizations held in Arequipa, the resumption of protests and mobilizations as of January 4, 2023 was ratified.
The Government is deploying military and police officers in view of the possibility that, as of January 4, the demonstrations will resume.
In a press conference with the Association of the Foreign Press in Peru (APEP), the Peruvian Defense Minister, Jorge Chávez, assured that the Armed Forces are deployed in support of the National Police by virtue of an emergency decree issued by Boluarte's government.
"The Armed Forces have already deployed the means and the personnel by virtue of the information (with which the Government has)," Chávez said.
In this sense, he explained that "they have already located the areas where demonstrations could possibly take place on January 4 that could degenerate into violent actions in order to protect critical assets, strategic infrastructure, road network and, above all, the highest priority is to protect the population,” he added.
Social organizations from Ayacucho, Huancavelica and Andahuaylas (Apurímac) would be the first to resume mobilizations in rejection of Congress and the current transitional government. It is also said that the southern part of the country (Arequipa, Cusco, and Puno) would join these demonstrations.
