Dina Boluarte Criticizes Protests on January 4: "There are four points that are not in my hands to resolve" (La República [Spanish] - 12/30/2022)
The Head of State questioned leaders of seven regions of the country who demand the closure of Congress, the release of Pedro Castillo from prison, as well as the advancement of elections in 2023.
The President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, questioned that union leaders and organizations from seven regions in the south of the country restart the protests on January 4, to demand the release of Pedro Castillo from prison, the closure of Congress and the early elections in 2023.
From Cusco, the Head of State—in statements to the press—said that the proposals are unfeasible and the initiative against the Government "are four points" that are not in her hands to resolve.
“Marches are not unattended social programs. There are four political points that are not in my hands to resolve. One of them is the advancement of elections that we already gave at our initiative. The second is asking for my resignation and what do we gain with my resignation?” advanced Boluarte.
Along these lines, she mentioned that "as a third point they are requesting the departure of former president Pedro Castillo", but that this process is prosecuted in the courts and "as democrats they are respectful of the autonomy of the institutions."
Likewise, Boluarte stated that—as a fourth demand—the leaders ask for the closure of Congress; however, its management cannot violate “the legal framework.”
In this way, she ruled that the protest measure “are pretexts to continue causing chaos.”
Criticism
Dina Boluarte explained that her government is not responsible for the lack of tourism in Cusco, as well as the low economic activity that is registered in Puno and Arequipa because of the protests.
“What is driving away tourism is not Dina Boluarte. I am not going out with statements saying do not come to Peru. It is the news that is coming out of the violence that is being registered. Although it is true that they are organizing marches for January 4th, I ask those who are going to march, will this help to reactivate tourism to Cusco or will this reactivate the economy in Puno, Arequipa? What are we going to achieve with that?” she said.
