Demonstration Alert: Possible Demonstrations and Transportation Issues - U.S. Embassy Lima, Peru (full post)

December 30, 2022

Location:

Cusco, Puno, and Other Locations in Peru

Event:

Additional anti-government demonstrations are expected to begin in Cusco on or around December 30 or 31, 2022 and may result in strikes, transportation delays, cancellations, or lack of availability.  Travelers during similar events in December were delayed in departing Aguas Calientes/Machu Picchu by several days.

Separately, a holiday pause called by protestors in mid-December is scheduled to expire in early January; that too may lead to renewed protests and demonstrations beginning on or around January 4, 2023.  Travelers may encounter disruptions to local transportation services, including local airports, roads, and railways across Peru and should be prepared to shelter in place for some days if necessary.  In addition to Cusco, Puno and areas near the Peruvian-Bolivian border are also likely to experience protests.
