Crisis in Peru: Armed Forces Caused 167 Deaths During Protests Held Between 2003 and 2020 (The Times Hub - 12/26/2022)
According to the National Human Rights Coordinator, Most of These Crimes Have a High Rate of Impunity and There are No Penalties Whatsoever.
Due to the intervention of the Armed Forces to restore order in the face of the wave of protests in the country following the dismissal of former president Pedro Castillo, who is serving 18 months in pretrial detention in the Barbadillo prison for the failed self-coup on March 7. December, its role has been put into discussion considering that there have been human losses and assaults.
According to the latest report from the Ombudsman's Office, there are twenty-eight dead and more than six hundred injured because of clashes between protesters and law enforcement. Most of the fatalities come from Apurímac, Arequipa, La Libertad, Cusco, Ayacucho, and Junín. For this reason, the National Human Rights Coordinator has revealed a diagnosis of the role of the armed forces. (more)
