Arequipa Airport Resumes Operations After Being Closed Due to Violent Attacks

At the airport it was reported that in these first days only daytime flights are scheduled due to damage to the lights and sensors on the runway.

The Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón International Airport (AQP) in the city of Arequipa resumed its operations this morning with the arrival of a first commercial plane from Lima, after a week of being closed due to the severe damage caused by the violent protests, it was reported.

The flight from Lima arrived at 6:15 a.m. and 15 minutes later, at 6:30 a.m., a plane left Arequipa airport for the capital.

The news was confirmed by the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), through its official Twitter account. He specified that at 06:15 a.m., the first flight that was operated by the airline Latam took place.

At the airport it was reported that in these first days only daytime flights have been scheduled due to the damage to the lights and sensors of the runway caused by vandals who forcibly entered this infrastructure on Monday, December 12, forcing suspend operations at this terminal and cancel scheduled flights.

The news was announced last night by Aeropuerto Andinos del Perú, the concessionaire of the Arequipa airport, which in a brief statement informed that this air terminal was ready to resume operations today, Monday the 19th.

However, he indicated that only people who are going to travel and who have a ticket or boarding pass, and have made the confirmation with the airline, will be allowed to enter.

On Friday the 16th, AAP stated, in another statement, that its priority has been the restart of airport operations in the shortest possible time and, for this, "our team has worked to recover the serious damage to the infrastructure of the International Airport Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón of Arequipa. For this reason, it is planned to resume flights, partially, from Monday, December 19.
